Averil knows an attorney in her Portland office whose daughter just graduated from the U of O with a major in French. She's taken a job teaching English for a year at a middle school in the city of Nancy which is far in the north of France. She took the train to visit us here in the south for a few days. We were only too happy to roll out the red carpet for an Oregon Duck.

She's been a great guest.
Asha's teacher is going on strike this Thursday (but not Ford's). When they strike, they are courteous enough to tell you in advance, by way of letter sent home with the child, and to limit it to one day (so far at least). Why do only some teachers strike, but not others? We don't know. Here's the strike letter:
The mayor supports the right of the teachers to strike, which is fundamental to a democracy, even while there should be minimal standards of service. So, you can take your child to the recreation center with priority given to the children of parents who work:
Speaking of school. Did you know that, in the classroom, whenever an adult enters (teacher or otherwise) all the children must stand at attention? Like in a courtroom when the judge comes in.
Speaking of standing at attention, Averil hung the clothes up on the clothesline in the freezing weather and here's what happened to my trousers:
Today was Valentine's Day. They do it in France. After school Ford went shopping for little presents:
