French LOTO

There was a fundraiser for the school last night at the Cultural Space in town.  Here's the flyer:

We put it on the calendar.  Everyone said it would be fun.  All of Ford and Asha's school friends were going.  We were asked to bring a cake, which we did.  We figured it would be a raffle of some sort, with socializing.  Do you want to guess what it was?

     Wrong!

It was BINGO -- French style.  Check it out:

The caller is our friend Laurent.  Did we mention that all our adult male friends are "Laurent"?  There were several hundred people there.  We knew many of them from the school.  Here's Asha with some of her school chums before bingo started:

I used to think that playing poker was the best way to learn your numbers.  Now I know that playing bingo is an even better way to learn!  You've got to either be really quick on the draw, or sit next to your son who can help translate the numbers for you as he searches for his own (because they're announced in quick succession).  Like everything else, French bingo is exactly like American bingo except where it's different.  Notice the cards are in a different shape . . . rectangular instead of square, with multiple free spaces.  You play lines across to win, and after there are two winners in that round, you are going for "full cardboard" (blackout):

Bingo started at 7 p.m. and went to about 10:30 p.m. There were sausages on the grill to buy for dinner along with frites, drinks, and home-made cakes. They take the playing very seriously and there were many big prizes to win including a centrale vapeur and other stuff that I didn't understand what it was.  Many people had their own special bingo markers that they brought in special sacks, and didn't have to use the corn kernels like us.

We didn't win anything but it sure was fun -- and exciting too!  Here are some photos taken while walking home from bingo at nearly 11:00 at night:

We close with a picture of this recent birthday invitation issued to Asha (remember, no school on Wednesdays):
